Ferry Landing Farm & Apiary

Jerry Worrell, . Website http://gworrell.freeyellow.com

Location: Dunkirk, Calvert County, Maryland

Major Crops or Products: Eggs (you MUST be early to get them), honey (sold out for 2009), jams & jellies (many varieties you won't find except at the farmers market), pollen, beeswax candles, and perennials (mostly daylilies and hostas).

Honey is sold out for the 2009 season.Maryland has a very short nectar flow (May and part of June)The constant daytime rain in May 2009 prevented the bees from flying to collect their usual harvest.. Honey is collected and bottled in early July. When it's gone, that's it for the year. For fresh brown eggs you MUST be there early! I sometimes run out of eggs before I run out of line! Nothing is sold from the farm- only at the farmers markets. At the recommendation of MDA we closed the farm to visitors to limit the exposure of the chickens to possible import of avian flu. I maintain a flock of about 200 layers with a quarter replaced every six months to maintain a high level of production. All eggs are less than a week old and each dozen is weighed and sold by size. I do not put an expiration date on the carton. The lot number signifies the date the eggs were lain in Julian date format (first digit is the year and the next 3 are the day of the year, i.e, 001 to 365) 8001 is january 1, 2008, 8365 is new years eve.

Acres: 15

Years farming: Since 1973

Why farm? It keeps me physically active and I enjoy working outside. Beekeeping helps with the understanding of nature and the environment.

Other markets attended: Riverdale Park on Thursdays.

Why do you like the market? The customers come from a broad spectrum of backgrounds. Discussions are interesting.

A member of Takoma Park Market since: 1984
